Sorry for the title but I just couldn’t resist. Now, getting to the subject, libraries are a great resource for entertainment and learning. Even so they are often overlooked.
I, like many people who transplanted to this area, moved here from a small/poor community that did not have the community resources to have a great library. Because of this, I was not aware of just how big and valuable the library systems are here is the Sacramento region. I became aware, only by accident, after my son was born. When my son was old enough to sit up, my sister-in-law told me I should take him to story time. So I looked up story time at my local library on the internet. Since the library website is part of the city government site, not only was my local library’s times listed, but the story times of the other libraries nearby were listed as well. I didn’t even know there were other large libraries in my city. In addition to the traditional story time sessions, there was also special story times that are geared toward infants and sensory processing disorders.
In addition to story time for small children, there are other great programs for the older children. There are book clubs, game clubs, and special events and classes. The library also provides counseling for children about to go college. I fully intend to utilize these services for my son as he gets older.
There are many downsides with living in urban and suburban settings, but the library systems that come along with our local and neighboring cities are truly a bright spot. Even if your local library doesn’t have an event or club that meets your needs, there is likely another library nearby that does. Check out your local government website’s library page to see what services are available, the times, and locations.
